Sorry Birthers Obama does not want to take away YOUR Internet

The Story of the Week in Technology

When I read the fracas from the teabaggers about the president trying to “Take Away Their Internet”, I almost gagged from the laughter. I could hardly catch my breath. these people have totally lost it finally I think.

somehow it just doesn’t figure to me, that they ignore their original Internet Thieves – who invented the Clipper Chip; and put all kinds of restrictions in place to slow down traffic; they’ve rerouted traffic over their networks to enable the clipper chip; and then to sniff packets at a rate unseen before.

How Could They Forget About All Of That from 8 years ago ? in fact even farther back we saw traces of it with the FBI and CIA forcing internet service providers to provide both transcripts and ip ownership info; regardless of the rights to privacy that are implied on most internet accounts.

Granted the amount of court cases that it took to get them to finally stop snooping on citizens – and start looking for crime was sheer stupidity. finally they saw the value of the internet as a Venue and began using it’s more elusive nature to snare criminals. this is how most sexual predators and hackers are now busted. by their ip addresses and time as obtained from their internet connection. even free connections and internet cafes’ are now subject to search; as crime scenes,  globally.

I keep wondering if the president needs to contact Blanca DeBree and put her on retainer to let the Hillbilly Jihad know that they are still safe.  there is no plot to take their quaint way of life – and complicate it by adding logic or anything rational like that. instead we’ll just wait until they discover that they were wrong in each of the cases where they’ve gone off like a fourth of july cherry bomb.

these btw are the same people who do not want nationalized health care which would allow them to get their heads and teabags checked by medical personnel.

Umm… Actually Obama Doesn’t Want to Take Over The Internet

By Nicholas Thompson – www.wired.com
September 2, 2009 – 8:27 am

smashed-computer1A number of people — including two of my favorite tech writers, Mike Masnick at Techdirt & Declan McCullagh at CNET — are up in arms about a new bill going through the Senate that allows Obama to “take over private networks.” Oh no! That would be really stupid.

But actually, the Senate bill in question does nothing of the sort.

The controversy dates back to April when Senators Olympia Snowe and Jay Rockefeller drafted S-773, a bill that, in its original form, did have some seriously bad ideas in it. For example, in an emergency, the president could “order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network.”

Outrage predictably followed. And the bill got better, much better. I’ve just read a draft of the whole thing. (Click here to read it too.) And there’s nothing in it that merits the current outrage.
Most of the bill, in the draft I read, proposes ways to improve our cyber-security infrastructure. It recommends scholarships for kids who want to work on cyber security (good idea!) and prizes to inspire contests that will get people to do things in the field (good idea!).

The formerly onerous section, which begins on p.25, has been changed to the following:

In the event of an immediate threat to strategic national interests involving compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network — [the president] may declare a cybersecurity emergency; and may, if the President finds it necessary for the national defense and security, and in coordination with relevant industry sectors, direct the national response to the cyber threat and the timely restoration of the affected critical infrastructure information system or network.

Notice all the hedging. He “may”, “may”, “if he finds it necessary”, “in coordination.” And then they payoff? He can “direct the national response”!

That’s not giving him any powers that he doesn’t already have, and there’s no justification in that language for the hysteria. It is also much more in sync with what Obama himself has said. He has been very clear that he doesn’t want to snoop on private networks, much less take them over.

So why write the bill if it doesn’t give the president any more authority? I’ve heard two reasonable theories. Marc Ambinder at the Atlantic suggests that the goal may be to give power to the president on these issues at the expense of the less-open NSA and DOD. Under that theory, the bill is actually designed to keep potential channels of dissent in a crisis more open to the public, rather than less.

The second theory is that it’s just a senate jurisdictional battle. Every senator knows that cybersecurity is a pressing issue, and everyone wants his or her name on the big bill. So the Commerce Committee, with authors Snowe and Rockefeller on it, is trying to define the issue of cybersecurity as depending on relationships between the government and private companies — thus making it something they have authority over. Other senators, of course, will try to define the issue so it falls under the authority of their committees.

So, in the end, it has much more to do with Senate power games than men in black hats.

It’s Tricky Tuesday: Say Pardners, can we see yo huntin permits ?

We Did Not Write this Headline – but you bes believe We Read It.. this is why this week we are focusing on  “American Hate”, sadly.

SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER ISSUES WARNING: Violent, well-armed white militias driven by recession and hatred for Obama on the rise.

*A veteran civil rights organization – the Southern Poverty Law Center – last week issued a report carrying a severe warning.

We Also Saw This Headline -

and it made us wonder when the FBI would be getting the message that all the rest of America is seeing on their nightly news ?  this is no joke people. this is what you can label Homegrown Extreme-ism. anotha ism and skizm to act as a buffer to reality in america.

fyi these are Hillbilly Jihadists

when will we be free from Headlines like This ?

SWASTIKA PAINTED AT BLACK CONGRESSMAN’S OFFICE: Rep. David Scott says it reflects increasingly racist debate over health care.

*A swastika was found Tuesday painted on a sign outside Rep. David Scott’s district office, an act the Georgia Democrat said reflects an increasingly hateful and racist debate over health care, reports the Associated Press.

Could it be that when we read these two stories we didn’t read them together, and use the same scale to measure the effects on the whole of America ?

NOW AT ‘EUR THIS N THAT’: Was Black Woman at Town Hall Meeting Treated Unfairly? (Video)

*The town hall meetings on “Obamacare” have been eventful to say the least. Outbursts and fury have been commonplace, but the news reports of unruly participants have been erroneous … well, at least in the case of a Ms. Maxine Johnson in Missouri.

Look at 0.42 of the video and see her assaulted from across the aisle by a man who snatches her sign, and tosses it out. she is taken out and arrested – he is just taken to the lobby and returns to the event; even though he is the one who started it.

WHY ?

This guy poses a definante threat – with a GUN.
Why Is He Allowed to be so close to a crowded debate with a gun?

He is a threat to the President of the United States. this wouldn’t have ever happened under Any Other President.

Do You Remember it Happening Before ?

anyone found thinking about a gun in the state would end up in a stranglehold and in jail; or a mental institution, for the rest of their lives; under the previous administrations.

Do you remember Lynette “Squeeky” Fromm who was just released from jail this week; yearssss after Reagan was dead and burried. hmmmm…. this is a sign that the times have changed – and not for the better I might add.

Please tell me why he is NOT a Threat to The People There and The President –

WHY ?

Man carrying assault weapon attends Obama protest

PHOENIX — About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Mondaythe latest incident in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.

Gun-rights advocates say they’re exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday’s event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn’t need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested.

The man with the rifle declined to be identified but told The Arizona Republic that he was carrying the assault weapon because he could. “In Arizona, I still have some freedoms,” he said.

Phoenix police Detective J. Oliver, who monitored the man at the downtown protest, said police also wanted to make sure no one decided to harm him.

“Just by his presence and people seeing the rifle and people knowing the president was in town, it sparked a lot of emotions,” Oliver said. “We were keeping peace on both ends.”

Last week, during Obama’s health care town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., a man carrying a sign reading “It is time to water the tree of liberty” stood outside with a pistol strapped to his leg.

“It’s a political statement,” he told The Boston Globe. “If you don’t use your rights, then you lose your rights.”

Police asked the man to move away from school property, but he was not arrested.

Fred Solop, a Northern Arizona University political scientist, said the incidents in New Hampshire and Arizona could signal the beginning of a disturbing trend.

“When you start to bring guns to political rallies, it does layer on another level of concern and significance,” Solop said. “It actually becomes quite scary for many people. It creates a chilling effect in the ability of our society to carry on honest communication.”

He said he’s never heard of someone bringing an assault weapon near a presidential event. “The larger the gun, the more menacing the situation,” he said.

Phoenix was Obama’s last stop on a four-day tour of western states, including Montana and Colorado.

Authorities in Montana said they received no reports of anyone carrying firearms during Obama’s health care town hall near Bozeman on Friday. About 1,000 people both for and against Obama converged at a protest area near the Gallatin Field Airport hangar where the event took place. One person accused of disorderly conduct was detained and released, according to the Gallatin Airport Authority.

Heather Benjamin of Denver’s Mesa County sheriff’s department, the lead agency during Obama’s visit there, said no one was arrested.

Arizona is an “open-carry” state, which means anyone legally allowed to have a firearm can carry it in public as long as it’s visible. Only someone carrying a concealed weapon is required to have a permit.

Paul Helmke, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said people should not be allowed to bring guns to events where Obama is.

“To me, this is craziness,” he said. “When you bring a loaded gun, particularly a loaded assault rifle, to any political event, but particularly to one where the president is appearing, you’re just making the situation dangerous for everyone.”

He said people who bring guns to presidential events are distracting the Secret Service and law enforcement from protecting the president. “The more guns we see at more events like this, there’s more potential for something tragic happening,” he said.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said armed demonstrators in open-carry states such as Arizona and New Hampshire have little impact on security plans for the president.

“In both cases, the subject was not entering our site or otherwise attempting to,” Donovan said. “They were in a designated public viewing area. The main thing to know is that they would not have been allowed inside with a weapon.”

Representatives of the National Rifle Association did not return calls for comment.

Q+A: What might happen with monitored North Korean ship?

Sun Jun 21, 2009 10:21pm EDT

(Reuters) – The U.S. Navy is tracking a North Korean ship under a new U.N. resolution that bars Pyongyang from trading in weapons, including missile parts and nuclear material.

U.S. officials have declined to say what the Kang Nam might be carrying, but said it was “a subject of interest.” The vessel left a North Korean port on Wednesday.

WHAT IS THE LATEST?

Fox News quoted a senior U.S. military source as saying the ship appeared to be heading toward Singapore and that the navy destroyer USS John McCain was positioning itself in case it gets orders to intercept, according to a story on its website.

Singapore, a U.S. ally, said it takes “seriously the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction” and would act “appropriately” against the ship if the vessel heads to its port with a cargo of weapons. Singapore is the world’s top ship refueling hub. It was unclear how long the vessel would be able to sail before it needs to refuel.

The Kang Nam is the first North Korean ship to be monitored under the new resolution, adopted this month in response to Pyongyang’s May 25 nuclear test. The resolution authorized U.N. member states to inspect North Korean sea, air and land cargo.

The United States and others have said they suspect North Korea of selling arms, missile parts and proliferating nuclear expertise in violation of earlier U.N. sanctions.

HOW MIGHT THE SITUATION PLAY OUT?

A U.S. naval vessel could intercept the ship, which is believed to be North Korean flagged, while it is in international waters and officers could seek permission to board. According to the resolution, permission must be given by the flag nation, or Pyongyang in this case, which would be sure to refuse.

North Korea has not commented on the monitoring of the ship but is likely to regard any attempt to inspect its cargo as highly provocative and a further reason to test the resolve of the international community. It has threatened a military strike if any country tries to impose any sort of naval blockade.

WHAT DOES THE U.N. RESOLUTION ALLOW?

The resolution calls upon — but does not order — U.N. member states to inspect cargo to and from North Korea if there are reasonable grounds to believe it contains banned materials.

It calls upon member states to inspect vessels, with the consent of the flag state, on the high seas, if they have information the ship is carrying prohibited materials.

If the flag state refuses to give permission, it is supposed to ask the vessel to sail to a convenient port for inspection by local authorities, who should seize any banned goods and destroy them. However, the resolution does not authorize the use of force. If a North Korean ship refuses to be inspected, the only recourse is to report the refusal to the Security Council.

The resolution also says member states should withhold fuel and supplies to North Korean vessels if a ship is believed to contain prohibited items unless provision of such services would be needed on humanitarian grounds.

This raises the prospect of a protracted standoff in a foreign port should the North Korean vessel try to dock to refuel and the captain refuse to allow local authorities on board.

WHY WOULD NORTH KOREA SEEK TO FLOUT THE SANCTIONS?

Weapons exports are a key source of revenue for North Korea’s broken economy.

A study by the U.S.-based Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis think tank estimated North Korea, whose annual GDP is about $20 billion, earns some $1.5 billion a year from missile sales. North Korean missile technology has already been exported to Pakistan, Libya, Iran, Syria and Egypt. Washington says Pyongyang has also exported nuclear technology to Syria.

A drop in trade and the value of North Korea’s currency has cut the regime’s access to foreign exchange, further raising the risk Pyongyang will increase the sale of its military know-how.

Singapore says would act if North Korea ship has WMD

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore will take action against a North Korean ship that the United States is monitoring, if the vessel heads to its port with a cargo of weapons, the government said on Saturday.

“Singapore takes seriously the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery and related materials,” said a spokeswoman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“If the allegation is true, Singapore will act appropriately.” The U.S. Navy is monitoring a vessel called Kang Nam at sea under new U.N. sanctions that bar North Korea from exporting weapons, including missile parts and nuclear materials.

Fox News quoted a senior U.S. military source saying the ship appeared to be heading toward Singapore and that the navy destroyer USS John McCain was positioning itself in case it gets orders to intercept, according to a story on its website.

Singapore, a U.S. ally, has the world’s busiest shipping port, with most containers being trans-shipments between East and West, and it is also the world’s top ship refueling hub.

Singapore government agencies could not give information on the current location of the ship.

“We don’t know even whether she is coming to Singapore,” said a source at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, which is responsible for security in Singapore waters and at its port.

The U.S. officials said the ship became “a subject of interest” after leaving a North Korean port on Wednesday.

The Kang Nam is the first ship to be monitored under the U.N. sanctions adopted last week after Pyongyang raised tensions by test-firing missiles, restarting a plant to produce arms-grade plutonium and conducting a nuclear test.

The U.S. has deployed anti-missile assets to the Pacific in case Pyongyang launches more missiles, U.S. officials have said.

North Korea’s media on Saturday said it was not threatened by new sanctions after a U.N. committee said it was considering blacklisting more North Korea companies, and individuals, for supporting Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

“It is foolish and ridiculous of our enemy powers to call for more sanctions and isolation… (do they think) it could make us even raise our eyebrows one bit?” North Korea’s Rodong Sinmum newspaper said in a commentary.

“If they point a gun at us, we will get back with a cannon. If they point a cannon, we will point missiles and for sanctions, we will give them revenge. Getting back with a nuclear weapon for a nuclear weapon is what we do.”

WOW, Thanks Ariana – we read you all the time too Girlfriend.

What do we have to say about this,  Well We Wish we could get a translation of this guys speech because it certainly looks like he’s not saying what President Obama is saying; but what exactly he’s saying is a mystery since we dont’ speak Turkish.

(to read the whole speech, please click the title link)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you so much. Well, it is a great pleasure to be here. Let me begin by thanking Professor Rahmi Aksungur — did I say that properly — who is director of the university here. And I want to thank all the young people who’ve gathered together. This is a great privilege for me and I’m really looking forward to it.

I’m going to make a few remarks at the beginning and then I want to spend most of the time having an exchange and giving you an opportunity to ask — ask questions of me and I may ask some questions of you.

So as I said yesterday, I came to Turkey on my first trip overseas as President for a reason, and it’s not just to see the beautiful sights here in Istanbul. I came here to reaffirm the importance of Turkey and the importance of the partnership between our two countries. I came here out of my respect to Turkey’s democracy and culture and my belief that Turkey plays a critically important role in the region and in the world. And I came to Turkey because I’m deeply committed to rebuilding a relationship between the United States and the people of the Muslim world — one that’s grounded in mutual interest and mutual respect.

Turkey and the United States have a long history of partnership and cooperation. Exchanges between our two peoples go back over 150 years. We’ve been NATO allies for more than five decades. We have deep ties in trade and education, in science and research. And America is proud to have many men and women of Turkish origin who have made our country a more dynamic and a more successful place. So Turkish-American relations rest on a strong foundation.

Barack Obama: Reaction from the world’s media

Reaction to Barack Obama’s election as US president from the world’s media.

“Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday, sweeping away the last racial barrier in American politics with ease as the country chose him as its first black chief executive. The election of Mr. Obama amounted to a national catharsis – a repudiation of a historically unpopular Republican president and his economic and foreign policies, and an embrace of Mr. Obama’s call for a change in the direction and the tone of the country. But it was just as much a strikingly symbolic moment in the evolution of the nation’s fraught racial history, a breakthrough that would have seemed unthinkable just two years ago.” – New York Times

“Obama has done it. Amid global expectation, Americans have accepted the challenge of change proposed by the Democratic candidate for the White House to give a clear victory in elections held this historic Tuesday, November 4, making him the first black president in the history of the country. There was little his Republican rival, John McCain, could do faced with the enthusiasm generated by the message of hope launched by the Democratic candidate during his campaign, one of the brightest in living memory.” – El Pais, Spain

“Barack Obama, 47, is now revealed as the 44th president of the United States, and November 4 2008 as a landmark in the history of the country. “The historic Election Day brought millions of new and sometimes tearful voters, long lines at polling places nationwide, and celebrations on street corners and in front of the White House. It ushered in a new era of Democratic dominance in Congress, even though the party’s quest for the 60 votes needed for a veto-proof majority in the Senate remained in doubt early today. In the House, Democrats made major gains, adding to their already sizable advantage and returning them to a position of power that predates the 1994 Republican revolution. Democrats will use their new legislative muscle to advance an economic and foreign policy agenda that Bush has largely blocked for eight years.” - Washington Post

“In winning the White House, Obama modified the electorate: About 1 in 10 of those casting ballots Tuesday were doing so for the first time. Though that number was about the same as four years ago, most of the newcomers were younger than 30, about a fifth were black, and a fifth were Latino. That was greater than their share of the overall population, and those groups voted overwhelmingly for Obama. He also won large majorities of female, black and Latino voters. Although he lost among white voters, Obama did better than Democratic nominee John F. Kerry in 2004.” – Los Angeles Times

“Congratulations to President Obama, as we must come to think of him … He fought a brilliant campaign, beginning with his total befuddlement of the supposed sharpest operators in the country, the Clintons. Where’s the old politics of personal destruction when we needed it in the snows of Iowa, eh? As for us losers, there’s no point going down the right-wing version of Bush Derangement Syndrome. Any shrill vicious ad hominem invective would be much better directed at each other. The Republicans lost this election … I think we are near a point at which America joins the rest of the west as a center-left society – that’s to say, a society whose assumptions about the role of government and the size of the state are far closer to Continental social democracies than to the Founding Fathers.” - Mark Steyn, blogger at The National Review

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet: Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States. A newsroom may be one of the worst places on earth to appreciate this sort of moment. But what a moment for our country. Crowds are mobbing the White House (in a good way), reportedly.” - Nate Silver, blogger and psephologist at FiveThirtyEight

“This morning, November 5, 2008, President-Elect Barack Obama marked the stunning victory of a seemingly impossible campaign with a short but characteristically inspiring speech. A pep rally for a nation in sore need of one. A nation, as he said, facing multiple perils. Unlike 34 years ago when Nixon left town, the joy of the crowds – who gathered to hear Obama in Grant Park in Chicago, in Times Square, at the White House, and in other public places and private homes – comes both because we can see the end of a reign of terrible leadership and because we will soon have a leader who has vowed, with our help, to lay the groundwork for a new day in America. We were happy with Nixon gone. But our happiness was momentary because we had nobody encouraging us to press forward with a “bottom-up politics” to transform our communities, our nation and our nation’s relationship with other nations. Now we do.” – Meteor Blades, blogger at Daily Kos

as part year residents only 3 miles from the headquarters of gm, we’re really interested in hearing all about the bailout.  we know what the aig and wall st bail outs brought – happy days at an arizona spa for lot of happy executives. we’d just like to see our tired autoworkers be able to go home at night without wondering when they are gonna loose their jobs, houses and vehicles. many of these folks helped make this change; do it for those you promised a good life to Shrub.. and You Too Mr O-Man. We’re Depending On Ya, Really Doh !

Here in the ‘Motortown’, as we’re affectionately refered to by Mr Mandela; we need to hear some reassurances on our statement of financial fitness; as things are pretty dim right now. winter is hardly started and today the news reports said there wouldn’t be enough salt, or gas to keep the roads clean through the entire winter season – what are they talking about ? this whole region is ontop of a Salt Mine – and there are Refinery’s that dot the freeways in this area.  so why will there be a shortage ?  no tax dollars to pay for the Gas and Salt to keep the highways clean and safe.  Are You Starting to see what interconnected problems we’re approaching here My Presidents.. this is no joke, no sir ree bob.

King Bui tonight labeled them post bailout already – with the pronouncements of them being renamed to Government Motors and Federal Motors; he had no words for Chrysler. I added Crying Motors; cause they always cryin, and broke.  incidentially where is Lee Iacocca when you really need him. somebody get snoop-dogg on the phone, I know he knows where big pimpin is..

the Auto industry is so much a part of the US financial picture; that to let it fail, would be catastrophic. it’s estimated that for each job directly lost at the automakers, there are 6 jobs lost in the supplier industries. lest we forget, you need folks to make the radios, seats, and repair those vehicles once they are purchased. Auto Insurance is the biggest segment of the insurance picture; so without those cars, that industry will also be soon seeking a bailout -

and what of the skrippers, coney island folks, gas stations;  jiffylube,; kfc; party stores, grocery stores; payless shoes; and of course red lobster and ihop; they depend on these workers to help keep them afloat. even mickey d’s will take a hit if the big three go under. we didn’t even mention the farmers and producers who supply these stores with their products for these workers to purchase. is it getting clearer to you as a picture now ??  we live in a circular economy, and it is going to experience a domino like crash if something does’t stem the momentum of collapse. recession is in full swing, no doubt, but a depression; we need to avoid that at all costs.

I personally don’t wanna see Miss Obama being Driven anywhere in anything except an American product, and with that said, I’m issuing this proclaimation as Queen of Lutaloland; and Empress of ASID – Our Miss Obamas’ will not be driven in any product not manufactured in Their Homeland By Their Fellow North Americans.

Flex Fuel Development Credits aside, the auto manufacturers need a stabilization package, like yesterday.

so listen here folks in DC, do not test me on this one. I will make it rain, on both your parades if you do -

Bail out the Auto Companies Right Now. either do it, or your next presidents will be the team of Pelosi and Clinton.

Think I’m Kiddin – just go ahead and test me, because I want everybody to know that I – Mama ASID will go into my kitchen and cook up the hottest gumbo these mouths will ever taste, and then they will have nothing but time whilst they enjoy the Halo or Holiness; while considering how they Will Be Driving Miss Obama.

Nuff Said, so Shrub and O-Man Get This Done, cause I want Miss Obama’s Ford Boxes delivered before 1/17/09.

(in the words of bounty killer) Hol Dat !

Bush, Obama camps clash over aid for ailing auto makers

From Wednesday’s Globe and Mail

WASHINGTON — Gridlock has stalled the President and his successor over the issue of spending tens of billions of dollars to make America’s battered auto makers roadworthy again.

Yesterday, both camps were digging in to their separate positions on the issue.

President George W. Bush and president-elect Barack Obama “have policy differences, but that doesn’t mean they’re not both interested in helping improve the economy for the benefit of American citizens,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said yesterday.

Mr. Obama and Mr. Bush, the Oval Office’s lame-duck occupant, apparently failed yesterday to agree on when or how to structure a big bailout of the auto makers.

Mr. Obama, echoing leading congressional Democrats, wants the Bush administration to funnel already approved funds to car manufacturers. He apparently told Mr. Bush as much during a private, hour-long Oval Office meeting on Monday.

But Mr. Bush wants congressional Democrats to explicitly authorize the tens of billions of dollars the big car makers say they need to avert bankruptcy.

“We have gone as far as we can,” Ms. Perino said, referring to the bailout funds already authorized. “If [auto makers] believe that that’s not enough for them, they need to continue to work with Democrats, and then we’ll see what they can come forward with.”

The White House denied reports that it was linking help for the auto makers – which Mr. Obama wants to deliver to save hundreds of thousands of high-paying manufacturing jobs in unionized Democratic strongholds – to winning the next president’s backing for Mr. Bush’s last free-trade pact, a deal with Colombia, which increasingly protectionist Democrats don’t want. They also oppose it because union leaders have been targeted for killings in Colombia.

“In no way did the President suggest that there was a quid pro quo,” Ms. Perino said.

Mr. Obama’s transition team also denied that any quid pro quo was raised, and discounted reports of any tension with the White House.

But both the President and the man who will replace him were clearly jockeying for advantage behind the public façade of an amicable working visit and the first extended conversation between the two.

Yesterday, aides to Mr. Obama said he wants to name a prominent “czar” to oversee any bailout and transformation of the auto industry.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned that the collapse of any of the Big Three car makers would have a “devastating impact.”

During his election campaign, Mr. Obama made sweeping promises to save and transform the auto industry. He promised to direct billions in tax credits and subsidies to the industry so “new fuel-efficient cars can be built in the U.S. by American workers rather than overseas … and [to] ensure that American workers will build the high-demand cars of the future.”

But salvaging a domestic industry already eclipsed by Toyota and other foreign manufacturers, especially during a recession, may be politically costly as well as financially expensive.

The Big Three – all of which have extensive operations in Canada – are hemorrhaging cash.

General Motors Corp. may run out of money as early as next month and its stock price is at a half-century low. GM, along with Ford Motor Co., Chrysler LLC and the United Auto Workers have jointly asked for $50-billion from government – half to stave off industry collapse while they retool and half to go to the union’s fund for retiree health care.

Democrats want money from the $700-billion bailout package for financial firms to be channelled to the auto industry. The Bush administration says it can’t do that because the money was specifically earmarked for financial firms, not industrial giants. Only the $25-billion set aside for loans to develop fuel-efficient cars is available, the current administration says.

“We understand that they’re going through a very difficult time,” Ms. Perino said. “There’s been business decisions they’ve made over the years that have led to this situation.”

Independent analysts say as many as three million U.S. jobs could be lost if the big auto makers collapse, making their rescue a political imperative for the president-elect.

Democratic Senator Carl Levin of Michigan says he will propose legislation for the coming lame-duck session of Congress to free up funds for the auto makers.
