Going Right: A Global Mercury Treaty Defies the Odds

Going Right: A Global Mercury Treaty Defies the Odds

In my line of work it always seems like there are 99 ways for things to go wrong and only one way for them to go right. This week, however, defying all odds, something really big went right on the topic of global mercury pollution, and those of us who have been working to reduce mercury use and contamination for decades are still pinching ourselves.

The Obama Administration, less than one month old, went into its first international negotiation on an environmental matter with the stunning announcement that the U.S. supported an immediate start to negotiations for a legally binding treaty to reduce mercury. Following that opening, the administration took a leadership role in the negotiations all week. And on Friday, the world walked away with an extraordinary agreement to begin negotiations (while taking steps to deliver real-world reductions at the same time), all to be completed by 2013.

As the New York Times noted in today’s papers;

The United States resistance to binding international controls on mercury, a potent neurotoxin, evaporated at a United Nations-sponsored meeting in Nairobi this week, as 140 nations agreed Friday to draft a treaty to control mercury releases into the atmosphere. Most human-produced mercury emissions come from power plants and small-scale gold mining. The agreement calls for negotiations to begin in 2010 and a final draft to be completed by 2013. Susan Keane, a policy analyst with the Natural Resources Defense Council, said that Washington’s about-face changed the dynamics of the conference, helping bring around other resistant states, notably China, whose mercury emissions dwarf those of any other country.

For more than five years, progress on mercury pollution, which requires coordinated reductions in use around the world, has been at a standstill, largely because of unyielding opposition of the Bush Administration. Opposition to doing something proactive for environmental health protection. Opposition to setting a precedent for mercury control that they themselves had no interest in meeting in our own country. And most of all, opposition to collaboration and negotiation in a global government framework of any sort, for fear of the precedent success could create for global warming negotiations.

Despite the best efforts of an international coalition of non-governmental organizations called the Zero Mercury Working Group (of which we are a part), excellent background studies, and the support of all of Europe and much of the developing world, we spent five years getting absolutely nowhere on this topic thanks to the Bush Administation’s stubborn opposition.

The fur had to really fly for the U.S. to change its position so quickly. That’s where the “ninety-nine things that could go wrong” came in. We thought that given the tight time constraints, the most we could hope for was a lack of vehement opposition to a treaty proposed by European governments. However, as my colleague Susan Keane reported from the negotiations, what we got was good old fashioned US leadership that charted a new course on mercury protections around the world, setting a strong example to influence others to do the same.

Barak Obama already had a great track record on mercury. He and he alone reached out to us when he was the junior Senator from Illinois, interested in doing something meaningful on mercury pollution when he read an excellent series on the problem that had appeared in the Chicago Tribune. And the office’s initial inquiry to us about how the Senator could help solve this problem was just the beginning; they reached across the aisle to Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski to co-sponsor a bill that would ban the export of surplus mercury from the U.S. into global commerce, thereby reducing the supply glut that kept prices low and sparked demand for the toxic metal in industries in the industrial world. The mercury export ban passed the U.S. Congress in the fall of 2008, signed into law at the end of the Bush term.

Despite the positive start and new past leadership, however, I’ve worked in D.C. a long time, and there have been issues I’ve worked on where progress has been depressingl slow through both democratic and republican administrations. The Obama slogan “Change we can believe in” had a certain ring to it, but I was feeling a bit cynical about what might really be possible.

Then this. I’m here to tell you: This was the real deal, a decisive shift in position on a topic of real impact , and not one that was receiving significant media attention or scrutiny in advance. The State Department staff, with the nod from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, worked with EPA staff, with the nod from Administrator Lisa Jackson, and got the job done.

The result: I’m in awe. Thanks you guys! And we’ll be with you every step of the way in the upcoming negotiation, partnered through our Zero Mercury Working group with NGOs around the world to make a great and effective treaty happen.

Jesse Lee Peterson: Can I Get A Negro Please

I was visiting one of my fav blogs transgriot when I noticed that Monica had awarded Jesse Lee Peterson, with a shut up fool award. Not to be outdone, I decided that his commentary was also worthy of a Negro please award.

I think we all need to agree that Barack Obama was elected mostly by black racists and white guilty people.  Most black Americans, 96% of them are racists towards white Americans.  And white people feel guilty and they are afraid of being called racist… As we move on with Barack Obama in there, you are not going to be able to speak out against him at all or else you will be called a racist… There is no way that you can believe in God and vote for a guy like Barack Obama.

It is one thing to have a dissenting opinion but when it comes clear that the foundation of your arguments is internalized racism, you in my book have earned yourself a solid Negro please award.  I tell you, we don’t need to worry about white privilege as long as we have idiots like this that are willing to do the work for them.  I wonder if he is on David Dukes payroll?

Despite infomercial, Vivica A. Fox says she’s no friend of the Psychic Friends Network

Wednesday, February 4th 2009, 11:51 AM

Vivica A. Fox says the Psychic Friends Network is misusing her image.

Vivica A. Fox has pulled a Dionne Warwick. And she says it’s an accident.

At the Psychic Friends Network you can ask your psychic anything you want – from your love life to your career to anything in between. Mmmhmm – I know I have,” Fox coos in an infomercial for the Psychic Friends Network.

The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star recites such infomercial sound bites as “want the best? You’ve got the best” and “give us a call 24 hours a day, seven days a week” in the two-minute spot.

But Fox says she didn’t authorize her participation in the ad – even though she’s positioned in front of a PFN logo and mentions the organization by name in the video. Her image – and biography! – are also prominently featured on the PFN Web site.

“Vivica A. Fox is no friend of The Psychic Friends Network,” she says in a statement released by her publicist.

Fox says that the video “is using her unauthorized likeness, footage, voice and photographs as an endorsement of their service.”

The 44-year-old actress is also demanding that the psychic company “cease and desist immediately” with use of the video and images.

Fox’s rep wouldn’t go into details on how the video was shot. The Psychic Friends Network was unavailable for comment.

Legendary singer Dionne Warwick famously plugged the phone-in psychic service in the early ’90s.

LisaRaye in Deep Sh*t?

Written by Necole Bitchie under Celebrities

lisa-raye-rolls-royce

Actress and First Lady of Turks and Caicos Lisa Raye McCoy-Misick took the stand last week in a government corruption trial against her husband.  Reading the 200 page court document and a few articles on the trial made my head spin but I’ve come to the conclusion that that her husband was a shady character.

According to court documents, Premier Misick was flying LisaRaye in charter jets back and forth from LA to the Island at a total of atleast $100 grand a trip (Turks & Caicos money).  He also insisted that she would be the face of the Island in T&C billboards and billed the Island a total of almost $300 grand for her appearances in those ads with an additional $150 grand for each “promotional appearance” that she did around the States. When questioned about this, LisaRaye’s response was:

I actually did not want to get paid at all. I didn’t feel it was right for the First Lady to kind of charge the country. I was concerned about how that would look.

She also revealed that Premier Misick gifted her on Valentine’s Day (or her birthday) with a White Phantom Rolls Royce that he leased through her company (How’d that happen????), and she is currently stuck with the $6900 monthly bill.

I did find out that the white Phantom Rolls Royce that he bought me for, I think it was either Valentine’s Day or my birthday, that he had leased it through my company, how I don’t know, so now I am stuck with the liability, I think it is $6,900 a month that I have to pay for it…..  I don’t remember signing anything, I was so excited about getting it, I wanted to probably make sure that it was mine if at all that I did sign anything. He brought it to the set and he put a big red bow on it and everyone from the set came out and it was like, surprise!”

Premier Misick was also dating a woman in Florida who eventually had his child during his marriage to LisaRaye, however, she claims that she didn’t find out about it until she came across his credit card receipts.

Well, I was aware of this [the Premier supporting his child's mother] a couple of months after I married the Premier of the first child. And then I was looking through paperwork at home and found the credit card and so I questioned that. I did not know about the second child. The second child was born a year after we were married. …knowing that a second child was even around and came in the midst of our marriage, you can imagine it was quite upsetting”

…And later in court, it was revealed in the terms of the prenup that he would build her a 6 million dollar house that the two would stay in during his trips to Los Angeles. She claims that it was his idea to sign a pre-nup.

We were in the ocean and he said to me: “I just left my Attorney’s Office” and he said, “he wants you to sign a pre-nup” and I said “I have no problem with that, I don’t even know how much you’re worth”. And he said to me, “but I don’t want you to” and I kind of felt half and half. I kind of felt like wow, like, really, and the other half was like why, that must mean that I don’t have any rights here? I came back to the States and I asked around and I said maybe perhaps I should have one because he is about to change my lifestyle and I don’t want to get stuck with all of what I am going through now.

LisaRaye also testified that the Premier gave her a Black American Express card so that she would be able to buy new clothes to fit the bill as the Island’s first lady. Sometimes shopping trips for clothes totaled over $200 grand and there was no limit to the couple’s spending at any given time.

I don’t wish this on anyone but I do think that LisaRaye allowed herself to get caught up in this larger than life lifestyle without knowing that the fairytale would soon end. They did some serious spending on the Island’s dime and I’d hate to see her get thrown behind bars for this.  This whole situation is a mess…

(Photos) Man-made Fake Eggs Sold on China Night Market

Posted by chinaview on August 15, 2007

Zhengzhou city’s local newspaper Zhengzhou Daily (Zhengzhou is the capital city of Henan province, in Central China) reported on Aug 13, 2007 that resident Mr. Wang, who’s selling food additive for many years, found that the chicken eggs he bought on night market didn’t look nature- his experience in food told him the “eggs” were made by additive!

So he caught the boss of the restaurant and asked him to tell he the truth, otherwise he will sue to the authority. The boss then reluctantly told Ms. Wang that the eggs were totally man-made, he actually didn’t make it himself but bought from a producer, and had finally told him the process of how to make fake “eggs”.

Mr. Wang then bought some materials – chemical food additive- and exposed to the reporter how to make fake eggs.

egg yolk

Above: additive liquor, for making egg yolk

egg yolk (2)

Above: egg yolk is ready after concreting

egg white

Above: put “egg white” – also additive- on egg yolk

After put the “egg” inside a calcium carbonate eggshell, a complete egg is ready – it only take less than 5 minutes.

Why make fake eggs ?

Because of money.

The cost of fake egg is only 0.55 Yuan/kg, while the true eggs’ market price is 5.6 Yuan/kg.

Hong Kong Finds Melamine In Imported China Eggs

Posted by chinaview on October 29, 2008

The Epoch Times, Oct 27, 2008  -

Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety recently announced that the melamine content in fresh eggs imported from mainland China has exceeded safety standards.

Last Friday, the Center for Food Safety confirmed the high concentration of melamine in eggs imported from the Dalian Hanwei Enterprise Group. The eggs were found 4.7 parts per million of melamine, compared with the 2.5 ppm safety limit.

The Center for Food Safety has requested that all supermarkets stop selling and importing eggs from the Dalian distributor. The same high melamine concentrations from the Dalian importer have also been found in eggs sold in Japan and other Southeast Asian countries.

Hong Kong Secretary for Food and Health York Chow said on Sunday that 60 percent of the eggs sold in Hong Kong are imported from mainland China—Hong Kong consumes an average of 1.6 billion eggs each year, or about 230 eggs per person.

Due to the area’s high egg consumption, the center will conduct melamine tests on eggs imported from mainland China in the next week. They plan to announce their findings as soon as they’re available.

“Since we have found melamine in eggs, we will surely exam chickens,” explained Chow. “Livestock feed might have been tainted by melamine, so officials will examine all meat and poultry imported from mainland China and pay special attention to animal organs, such as chicken kidneys and pork kidneys.”

Chen Jingming, a chicken farmer and livestock nutrition expert said that the cost for yellow bean powder, a main component of livestock feed, has shot up about 70 percent in the past year. Due to rocketing feed costs, he believes that some suppliers have illegally added melamine into their feed mixture to save money.

Chen added that since eggs have been found to be contaminated, food products containing eggs and other meat products imported from China might also have been tainted.

Chen emphasized that the authorities should make even stricter standards for safe levels of melamine in foods. He said they should not allow any trace of the contaminant in the food supply to prevent a potential panic from the public.

China Egg Farmers Desperate As Melamine Crisis Worsens, Over 10,000 Chickens Slaughtered Everyday

Posted by chinaview on November 2, 2008

The Epoch Times,  Oct 31, 2008-

Since Hong Kong detected melamine in Chinese eggs on October 26, egg farmers in northern China’s Dingxing county, Baoding city have been increasingly anxious about their livelihoods.

In the past five days, the egg wholesale price has not been over US88 cents per kilogram, and in Zhongtaoshen village, the 120 egg farmers have had to slaughter over 10,000 chickens everyday, according to wholesaler, Mr Liao’s estimation.

According to the Jinghua Times report, most of the local eggs are sold to Beijing and Guangdong, and wholesalers have already reported that all eggs will be rejected if there is not a “No Melamine” certificate attached.

Facing cash flow pressure, many farmers have had to sell their chickens to slaughterhouses at prices as low as US$1.20 per kilogram.

Egg farmer Lu Shuanxi from Zhongtao Shenyi village recently sold 1,000 chickens to the slaughter house for money to buy several more days chicken feed for the rest of his 5,000 chickens.

On October 27 and 28, no one came to his village to buy eggs, and on October 29, the egg price offered by wholesalers was only US64 cents per kilogram.

According to one Zhongtao Shenyi village committee staff member, there are few refrigeration facilities in the area, and the first batch of eggs produced after October 26 is expected to expire in 9 days.

However, those farmers are also victims, as recent media reports indicate that chicken feed is actually the source of the melamine in the eggs. The use of melamine is an open secret in the animal feed industry in China, which initially started in aquaculture farming, and spread to poultry and livestock farms.

Internet reports from mainland China argue that most of the melamine comes from chemical plant waste.

Alarming: Tainted Food = Terrorism ?

Posted by chinaview on November 2, 2008

Louis Klarevas, Forbes, 10.25.08-

With Halloween around the corner, think about what would happen if even a tiny portion of the candy distributed to trick-or-treaters was tainted. How many children would get sick? How many might even die?

Such fears are not unfounded, given the recent scandal involving nearly two dozen Chinese dairies that added toxic levels of melamine to milk products to artificially increase their protein levels. To date, the tainted milk has sickened over 50,000 children in China, killing four of them.

When people contemplate grave global threats, consumer goods don’t usually enter the radar. In this era of unshakable globalization, however, the lack of adequate regulation of international trade might compromise security as much as, if not more than, terrorism.

In late September, Cadbury (nyse: CBY – news – people ) announced that a recall of chocolates produced in China, which are sold only in Asia’s Pacific region, because they might contain contaminated milk powder. The sale of Oreos, M&Ms and Snickers in Indonesia–manufactured using Chinese milk products as well–has also been suspended after tests raised concerns.

But the threat is hardly limited to Asia. The hazard is one of global reach, leading to recalls and bans in 16 countries so far, including the U.S., where Mr. Brown powdered drinks and White Rabbit candies, both imported from China, tested positive for melamine.

Tainted goods can kill–and not just a few people, but thousands. That makes quality control a national security issue.

Allow me to put it in perspective. In the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people died. Now take the recent crisis involving contaminated the blood thinner heparin. Earlier this year, hundreds of heparin consumers fell ill worldwide; over 80 died in the U.S. alone.

It turns out that over 450,000 Americans ingest the drug regularly as part of their dialysis regimen. There are tens of thousands more Americans who take heparin for other reasons. Imagine if just 1% of these patients died from contaminated heparin. That would translate into somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 deaths, twice the Sept. 11 death toll. And that’s Americans only. How many more would have died in other countries?

Sound alarmist? Perhaps. But the numerous recent incidents show quality control is lacking in the production of potentially harmful goods–often with deadly consequences. Let’s not forget the frozen dumplings containing pesticide that killed 10 people in Japan, and the cough syrup that contained a chemical used in antifreeze, which killed 115 people in Panama.

The products on this list, as it turns out, are exclusive to China. Yet as more large-scale labor markets compete for their share of international trade, the incentives to cut corners will increase and the temptation to overlook hazardous goods might become a more common occurrence.

As the case of China shows, developing countries–motivated by greed and a desire to increase market share–often fail to police their domestic corporations effectively. Even China’s imposition of maximum melamine limits on food products hardly goes beyond the cosmetic. As such, the onus falls on importing states and international organizations to keep us safe. Only well-coordinated and vigilant quality control can abate the dangers inherent in international trade……. Read the rest of this entry »
