The Coconut Revolution; coming to an island near you

why is it that tropical island nations always seem to be plagued by some evil bastards who don’t live there ? the guys above are the one who are Defending Their Island against the Australian Defense Force – Damn.

take the case of Bouganville; an island in the pacific ocean that is a part of the solomon islands chain. the problem is that australia thinks that they own it.

the Bouganville residents don’t agree, and we are with them.

the water you see in this picture is the run off of an open copper mine, cut into the middle of the Island of Bouganville; without the permission of the Citizens and Land Owners of the country.

this was done by Rio Tinto mining. a bunch of buzzards with offices in utah.  yeah right, morons.

who else would think it alright to rape and pillage another mans land, except colonialist interlopers – who of course used their friend and symbol, White Jesus.

These are blackfolks, and their Gods were in the land.  so why did the missionaries come to teach them to pray with their eyes closed ?

so that when they opened them, they would have the bible, and the missionaries and their companies would now have the land. devious indeed.. but that’s the way colonialism works. remember america ?

Please take a lil time, get comfy and then watch this long but quite interesting video on the Coconut Revolution.  it’s an eye opener.

Guns and soldiers on the high seas

BBC News

Pirates in Somalia are making a fortune by hijacking ships and demanding ransoms to set them and their crews free – one official estimates the total this year to be around $150m.

There are conflicting reports about how much they want for the Saudi oil tanker they seized last month, the Sirius Star, and its cargo of two million barrels of oil, but how do you negotiate and deliver a pirate ransom in the 21st Century?

The owner hires people to take the money… for the handover of the big bags of cash. Same like the movies.
Fahid Hassan, Harardhere

From what can be gleaned – how the negotiations run their course and how the ransoms are paid – what goes on would be worthy of a Hollywood action movie script.

“No matter what process is taken, they always go through a middleman,” advises BBC Somali service analyst Said Musa. “And trust is at the heart of everything.”

Fahid Hassan, who has experience of the negotiations, says that after boarding the ship, the first step for the pirates is to make contact with its owners.

“All the important documents are there on the ship, so the pirates can know easily all the information they need,” he says.

“The talks are by telephone, mostly satellite phone but sometimes even SMS/text messages are sent. The pirates do not negotiate themselves. They hire someone and often this person is a relative; someone they can trust.”

See satellite images showing the hijacked super-tanker, Sirius Star

“For the Sirius Star, there are two negotiators. Sometimes they are on the ship, sometimes they are in town. The negotiator must work and work and work to get the money which is a very difficult job. It is very difficult to please the owner and please the pirates,” he adds.

“But once the money is delivered the negotiator gets a share, the same as a pirate. Everyone on the ship gets an equal share.”

Mr Hassan says that in the past, the ransom was delivered by money transfer, but that now owners hire a third party to hand over the money directly.

“They come onto the ship or the pirates get onto their boat for the handover of the bags of cash,” he says.

“The men who bring the money then go; they leave the ship to let the pirates count and check. Some of the pirates have counting machines and also machines to detect fake notes.”

Cruise ship evades pirate attack

Nautica

The Nautica outran the Somali pirates, officials said

A US cruise ship carrying more than 1,000 people was targeted at the weekend by pirates off the coast of Somalia, maritime officials say.

Two small boats chased and fired shots at the Nautica eight times, but failed to board the vessel.

Her captain, Jurica Brajcic, manoeuvred away from the pirates and increased speed to outrun them.

The Nautica, with 656 passengers and 399 crew, was in waters patrolled by a multinational task force.

The ship was on a 32-day cruise from Rome to Singapore when it was attacked at 0930 local time (0630) on Sunday in the Gulf of Aden.

Oceania Cruises, the Miami-based company which owns the Nautica, described the events leading to the incident on their website.

“The skiffs, approaching from a range of approximately 1,000 metres, attempted to intercept the vessel’s course,” it said.

“Captain Jurica Brajcic and his officers immediately began evasive manoeuvres and took all prescribed precautions.”

Helicopter scrambled

The Times in London quotes a spokesman for the Danish Navy, which has current responsibility for maritime safety in that area, saying that a vessel was called on to aid the Nautica.

Danish TV later reported that a French Navy helicopter had been scrambled at its request.

The Nautica is the largest, though not the first, cruise ship to be targeted by pirates off the Somali coast.

In April this year, pirates seized Le Ponant, a luxury liner with 30 people on board. They were eventually freed after an eight day stand-off.

Oceania Cruises said it believed the attack was an isolated incident and that it would not be cancelling planned trips in the area.

The Nautica was scheduled to dock at ports in Italy, Egypt, Oman, Dubai, India, Malaysia and Thailand.

Correspondents say that despite the US-led creation of a special security corridor in the area, pirate attacks are continuing.

Pirates are still holding a Saudi tanker, the Sirius Star, and its cargo of 2m barrels of oil off the Somali coast.

On Tuesday, the AFP news agency quoted Somalia’s insurgent Islamist leader, Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, calling for “the release of all vessels under the command of Somali pirates”.

Mr Aweys added that his Islamist grouping was the only force capable of governing Somalia, which has not had a functioning government since 1991.

Had they still been in charge in Mogadishu, the pirates would have been stamped out, he said.

Afro Teddy guilty of hit and run. faces 5 – 15 years jailtime

Teddy Afro (Image: www.cyberethiopia.com)

Afro’s music has been an anthem for anti-government protests

Ethiopian pop star Teddy Afro has been convicted of the manslaughter of a homeless man killed in a hit-and-run incident in Addis Ababa in 2006.

The singer was found guilty of running the man down in his car and driving away without reporting the incident.

Ethiopia’s best-known pop star was also convicted of driving without a licence. He faces between five and 15 years in prison when sentenced on Friday.

His music became an anthem for opposition protests in 2005.

Many of his fans believe the charges against him were politically motivated.

But Judge Leul Gebremariam dismissed Teddy’s defence in a long summing-up, says the BBC’s Elizabeth Blunt, who was in the courtroom.

Thumbs-up

There had been some confusion about which night the homeless man had died.

On the first date the singer – real name Tewodros Kassahun – had an alibi: He was out of the country.

On the second possible date, Teddy said he had been out with friends. But the judge was not convinced and found him guilty on all charges.

As sentence was passed, the singer tried to protest and was hushed by his lawyers.

But as he left court, having regained his composure, Teddy gave a thumbs-up sign to friends and family and told journalists: “I never killed anyone, I didn’t get justice from this court.”

then we have Mr Genocide who was found guilty as hell, by a jury of his peers in Rwanda today. Good for yo stank ass. now somebody chop him..

Simon Bikindi Guilty of Inciting Rwandan Genocide – 15 yrs jailtime

Rwanda singer jailed for genocide

Simon Bikindi

Simon Bikindi founded a ballet company in Rwanda

One of Rwanda’s most famous singers, Simon Bikindi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for inciting violence during the 1994 genocide.

His conviction stems from a speech he made from a vehicle equipped with a public address system encouraging ethnic Hutus to kill Tutsis.

Prosecutors at the UN-backed tribunal based in Tanzania had called for the singer to be given a life sentence.

Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered in just 100 days.

In its judgement, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) said that several of Bikindi’s songs, which were widely broadcast in Rwanda at the time, had incited hatred against Tutsis.

However, the judges said the songs were written before the genocide and there was no evidence to suggest Bikindi had performed or played them in 1994.

‘Snakes’

Bikindi was convicted for a speech he made in June 1994 on the main road between Kivumu and Kayove, in north-western Rwanda.

“Simon Bikindi used a public address system to state that the majority population, the Hutu, should rise up to exterminate the minority, the Tutsi,” the judgement read.

“On his way back, Bikindi used the same system to ask if people had been killing Tutsi, who he referred to as snakes.”

The BBC’s Jamhuri Mwavyombo at the ICTR says his lawyers are considering whether to appeal against the sentence.

Bikindi was also a sports ministry official and founded Rwanda’s Irindiro Ballet.

He was arrested seven years ago in the Netherlands.

The most high-profile genocide cases are being tried by ICTR in Arusha.

Since 1997, the ICTR has convicted 29 people and acquitted five.

Mass break-out from Liberia jail

UN peacekeeper in Liberia

UN peacekeepers provide much of the country’s security

More than 100 inmates have escaped from Liberia’s only maximum security prison in the capital, Monrovia.

Officials at the South Beach compound in Monrovia say the prisoners hurled stones and bottles at guards.

They then forced open the main gates to make their escape. About 30 prisoners have been found so far.

The prison, which holds nearly 1,000 inmates, is guarded by unarmed police along with personnel from the United Nations peacekeeping force.

Liberia is recovering from a 14-year civil war which ended in 2003.

The BBC’s Jonathan Paye-Layleh in Monrovia says the escapees are mainly suspected armed robbers who had been charged and were waiting for a court appearance.

They had warned prison guards earlier on Monday that if they were not taken to court, they did not intended to spend Christmas behind bars.

Our reporter says the jailbreak is a blow to Liberia’s quest to rid the post-war crime and insecurity.

Thai demonstrators leave airports

By POD313

URL: Thai demonstrators leave airports

Anti-government protesters have left Bangkok’s main airports after an eight-day siege that has paralysed government and stymied tourism.

They packed up bedding before handing over both the international and domestic airports to the authorities.

The People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) called off the protests and after a court banned Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat from politics.

The protests have left thousands of tourists stranded in Thailand.

The BBC’s Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the lifting of the blockade at the international airport felt like the end of giant party, as yellow-clad protesters piled their belongings onto buses and headed home.

Some lined up for souvenir autographs from their leaders in front of the giant terminal building, our correspondent adds.

Unpopular

The PAD had been demanding the resignation of the prime minister, who they say is a proxy for deposed leader Thaksin Shinawatra.

Mr Somchai, who has been waiting out the siege in the northern city of Chiang Mai, says his allies will be forming a caretaker government with a new leader shortly.

ESCALATING CONFLICT
September 2006: Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra ousted in military coup
February 2008: Samak Sundaravej sworn in as prime minister
August 2008: PAD protesters occupy government buildings, demanding the government step down
September 2008: Mr Samak dismissed for violating conflict of interest law. Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin’s brother-in-law, becomes prime minister
October 2008: Thaksin given a two-year jail sentence for corruption in his absence
26 November 2008: Anti-government protesters take control of Bangkok’s main airport
2 December 2008: Thai court rules that PM Somchai should be banned from politics, and his party should be dissolved
3 December 2008:Protesters vacate Bangkok airports

The Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday that the three parties in the ruling coalition must disband. Each of them has since been re-formed under new names.

The same Constitutional Court deposed a pro-Thaksin government in September – that of Samak Sundaravej.

The PAD insisted on fighting on against allies of Mr Thaksin.

This time, although Mr Somchai’s allies plan to field a new government, the PAD is claiming victory.

Correspondents say the airport blockade was becoming increasingly unpopular, so that Tuesday’s court ruling against Mr Somchai offered a face-saving moment for the protesters to back down.

But the divisions that caused the protests, and regular recourse to more activists courts to act against the government, remain, correspondents said.

“The PAD will return if another (Thaksin) proxy government is formed or anyone tries to amend the constitution or the law to whitewash some politicians or to subdue the monarch’s royal authority,” one of the protest leaders, Sondhi Limthongkul, said on Tuesday night.

Chaturon Chaisaeng, a former Thaksin Cabinet member, suggested there could be civil war if the protest alliance presses for a non-elected government.

“Why do we still condone the PAD, who are waging terrorist attacks against government buildings and the democratic system? Do all Thai people have to bow to the PAD’s orders and demands?”

Domestic passenger flight are due to resume later on Wednesday, and international flights on Thursday.

However a full return to normal will take two days, officials said.

The airport closures have left more than 300,000 tourists stranded in Thailand, and cost the economy huge amounts in lost revenues.

At least six people have been killed over six months of protests and scores have been injured.

Reporters said the image of the country has taken a battering.

Papua mulls microchips for HIV

By Lucy Williamson
BBC News, Jakarta

The Indonesian province of Papua is debating whether to introduce a law allowing the government to implant microchips in people living with HIV.

The bill proposes tracking the movements of HIV-positive people who behave in what some MPs describe as an irresponsible way.

The proposal is the most controversial of a swathe of programmes to tackle the spread of HIV in Indonesia.

Papua has one of the worst infection rates outside Africa.

Tattoos

Dr Manangsang – a medical doctor who is also a member of Papua’s parliament – put the bill forward.

As well as proposing to use microchips to track people’s movements, it also suggests tattooing as a way of alerting health officials to carriers of the virus.

It recommends mandatory testing for all Papuans, with special ID cards issued to those who test positive.

Papua is home to almost half Indonesia’s cases of HIV, the result of a vibrant sex trade and large numbers of migrant workers.

But it is also the area of the country least equipped to deal with it.

Fewer than 20% of local clinics have the means to test for the virus, while much of the population lives cut off from towns, without electricity, vehicle access or phone coverage.

As You Can See, ain’t nonna dis good. so my question to you is, why is none of it on the news channels ? only the internet ?

something to ponder.. discuss amongst yourselves,
