Michael Jackson private funeral to be held before Tuesday memorial in LA
(all stories from the uk telegraph and uk times)
A public memorial service for Michael Jackson will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday after the Jackson family attends a private funeral with close friends.

But as organisers prepared for the free service at the arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, authorities scrambled to plan alternative arrangements for the thousands of fans expected to turn up to pay their respects to the King of Pop.
The Staples Center holds only 20,000 people, so LA authorities will erect large television screens outside to accommodate the tens of thousands of mourners expected.
Jermaine Jackson, the singer’s elder brother, said he believed hundreds of thousands of fans could descend on the city, including up to 20,000 from the UK alone.
The organising of the memorial has already been marred by indecision and red tape, and will be further delayed as America marks Independence Day, which is a national holiday.
There were also questions On Friday over who will pay for the massive police operation, with the cash-strapped city of Los Angeles struggling to pay officers overtime.
The state of California has just declared a “fiscal state of emergency” and is being forced to pay its bills with IOUs.
Jermaine Jackson said there would be a private ceremony for the singer’s family and special guests before the public memorial. He said the family also wants to hold other memorials around the United States.
Mr Jackson also said he did not believe Debbie Rowe, the mother of two of his brother’s three children, had a chance of winning custody of them.
Miss Rowe was married to the singer for three years and is weighing up whether to proceed with a legal battle for Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11. A court has made Jackson’s mother Katherine, 79, their temporary guardian.
Jackson is expected to be buried in a $25,000 (£15,000) casket made of solid bronze and plated with 14-karat gold. It is called the Promethean and is the same style used for the entertainer James Brown.
Ken Ehrlich, who will produce the memorial service, said it would not be a tribute show, but there would be some performances.
He said: “It will be a memorial service reflecting the dignity of what the family wants. It will be a fitting memorial to Michael Jackson. No dance numbers.”
Randy Phillips, chief executive of AEG Live, which was promoting Jackson’s 50-date comeback tour at the O2 Arena in London, said the singer had passed a medical with “flying colours”.
He disclosed that the promoters had taken $17.5 million (£11 million) in insurance coverage through Lloyd’s of London.
The policy covered Jackson’s accidental death, including from a drug overdose, but not if he died of natural causes.
A cause of death has yet to be established as the coroner awaits toxicology reports, but powerful sedatives were found at Jackson’s rented home in Los Angeles.
Michael Jackson to be buried in gold plated coffin
Michael Jackson will be buried in a solid bronze, gold-plated coffin worth $25,0000, it has been reported

The casket, called a Promethean, will feature a blue velvet interior and a hand-polished, mirror finish, according to TMZ.com.
It is the same type of coffin which soul singer James Brown was buried in.
Jackson saw the casket first hand when he paid tribute to the singer as he lay in state in New York City’s Apollo Theatre, where he started his career, in 2006
Brown’s body was transported to the theatre on a white carriage similar to that seen in the last few days at Jackson’s Neverland ranch.
On Thursday it emerged that Jackson’s funeral will be held on Tuesday at the Staples Centre, the home of LA Lakers in Los Angeles.
The stadium holds 20,000 people and, if the Jackson family takes up the offer, large television screens would be placed outside for thousands of other fans to watch.
Sources close to the family say they are fully committed to holding a public memorial for his fans and are being guided by “what Michael would have wanted”.
The Jackson family met the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol to discuss possible funeral arrangements in the city, a police spokesman said.
Another venue has had to be found after an initial plan to hold an event at Jackson’s Neverland ranch, 150 miles north-west of Los Angeles, was blocked by red tape.
It is illegal under Californian law to bury a body outside a designated cemetery. Police were also concerned about the practicalities of holding a public viewing at Neverland, which is only approachable by a small two-lane road.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which hosted the 1984 Olympic Games and can hold 92,000 people, has also emerged as a possible venue for the memorial.
The current whereabouts of Jackson’s body is being kept a closely guarded secret.
It has been suggested that he will be buried in the Hollywood Hills at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, and that his body is already there. Film legends including Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable are buried there.
However, a spokesman denied reports that Jackson’s body is there. The spokesman said: “We’ve never had him and we’re not going to.”
Jackson, who died aged 50, is expected to be temporarily buried in a cemetery, but a final resting place has been assigned for him by his family at the Neverland ranch, 150 miles north-west of Los Angeles, where he lived until 2005.
The spot is next to the ranch’s train station. Jackson used to ride in the train, which he named after his mother, Katherine, every day to go from his house to his private zoo.
It is against California law to bury a body outside a cemetery, but the family intends to challenge that. Jermaine Jackson, 54, the singer’s brother, said: “The people who make the laws can change the laws.”
But it could take months to obtain legal consent. The initial burial place is likely to be Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where stars including Marvin Gaye and Bette Davis are buried. But the family may decide to keep the exact location of the grave secret before moving the singer’s coffin to Neverland.
Michael Jackson’s family ‘want him buried in concrete’ to protect his grave
Michael Jackson’s family want his coffin to be be encased in concrete to prevent fans from robbing his grave.

The singer, wearing a stage costume, will be laid to rest in a gold-plated coffin, along with tokens from his life in music, including one of the white gloves he loved to wear.
But, according to US media reports quoting a friend of the family, the Jacksons want the coffin entombed in concrete immediately after the funeral – which is expected to be held in secret before Tuesday’s public memorial service – because of fears that a crazed fan could try to dig it up.
As well as the risk of someone disturbing his remains, family members are concerned that his grave could be desecrated, or be daubed with graffiti referring to his 2005 trial on child abuse charges, of which he was cleared.
A similar double burial was held for Elvis Presley.
Jackson’s public memorial service will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Millions of applications have been made in an online lottery for 17,500 tickets.
There are fears that touts may be using multiple email addresses to apply for the free tickets in order to sell them on ebay. Ken Sunshine, the Jackson family spokesman, said: “I’m hoping people have dignity. For those that try to take advantage of this, shame on them.”
Hordes of ticketless fans are expected to descend on Los An geles, and 1,400 police officers have been asked to volunteer for duty to control the crowds.
If Jackson is buried at Neverland, his family faces an uphill battle with nearby residents to open it as a place of pilgrimage similar to Graceland, where Elvis is buried. Graceland attracts more than 600,000 visitors a year.
