Apparently he wanted to get the real “flava of bavaria” uncut. in this clip we see him getting sprayed up and then on a bus with some rather unhappy soccer fans; who are not down with his steelo.

this is more representative of what I’ve personally seen in germany when attending sporting events and you are the sole darker face.  many other darker people have remarked to me over the years that they did not enjoy their trips to germany.

in the 90’s quite a few of my african american business associates remarked to me that they had experienced the same cold and differientiating treatment; because they were darker skinned. one was a senior account rep for amex who basically rejected the treatment and shut down a major account for purchases;  due to their lack of sensitivity to minority contractors and associates. he cancelled their ghost card on the spot. bamm.

Clearly they just didn’t realize that He Wasn’t The One..

Is Germany a racist country? That is what a new documentary, Black on White, is trying to find out. Its findings are shocking. But, as Damien McGuinness reports, the filmmaker himself has been criticized by black Germans for his methods.

Kwami speaks broken German and is childlike in his ignorance

For more than a year, journalist Gunter Wallraff travelled across Germany wearing a dark-haired curly wig and with his white skin painted black.

Equipped with a secret camera, and calling himself Kwami Ogonno, he went to predominantly white areas to see how a black man with a foreign accent is treated.

The experience, he said, was even more depressing that he had expected.

“I hadn’t known what we would discover, and had thought maybe the story will be, what a tolerant and accepting country we have become,” said Mr Wallraff after a screening of the film Black on White in Berlin. “Unfortunately I was wrong.”

He was almost beaten up by neo-Nazis after a football match in eastern Germany. And outside a small-town nightclub was told by a skinhead: “Europe for whites, Africa for apes.”

But the film’s most disturbing aspect is not the well-known racism of right-wing extremists, but rather the secretly-filmed reactions of everyday people – the landlady who says she could not possibly rent out a flat to a black person, or the shop owner who will not let “Kwami” try on an expensive watch, but willingly hands over the same watch to the next customer who is white.

Everyday abuse

For black people in certain parts of Germany such experiences are commonplace, believes Sven Mekarides, general secretary of the Africa Council in Berlin.

Mr Mekarides left his native Cameroon in 1991 and came to study in a small town in eastern Germany.

He says he and his fellow African students experienced racist attacks and abuse every day.

They were spat at, shouted at and beer bottles were thrown at them.

The worst attack took place in the eastern Berlin district of Lichtenberg in 2004, when Mr Mekarides and his girlfriend were surrounded by seven young men armed with knives.

“We soon realized that it was dangerous to travel in groups of less than three people. And we would never let any of the women go anywhere without accompanying them,” he said in a Berlin cafe.

Since then, he said, the situation has not got much better.

According to the Amadeu Antonio foundation there have been 138 racially-motivated murders in Germany since 1990. And last year police registered 140 race attacks in Berlin.

“Those are only the most extreme cases the police know about,” said Mr Mekarides.

“Every day we get calls from black people who have been falsely accused of stealing something or insulted on the street.”

Clown in a carnival?

Although Mr Mekarides welcomes the discussion about racism the film has sparked off, he believes the filmmaker’s exaggerated disguise confirms Europeans’ worst stereotypes of an African.

“He just doesn’t look like an African,” said Mr Mekarides. “The wig, the make-up and the brightly-coloured shirt are all so over the top, he looks like he’s a clown in a carnival.

“After he has washed his skin, he can forget the problem. But black people have this problem every day.”

Some German newspaper commentators have accused the filmmaker himself of racism for acting out such a negative stereotype of a black person. The character of Kwami speaks broken German and is childlike in his ignorance of dangerous situations.

Anti-racism pressure groups, meanwhile, have complained that the filmmaker is paternally speaking for black people, rather than with them. Why did he not simply film the experiences of real black people?

“It was crucial that I take on these dangers myself,” countered Mr Wallraff. “There’s no way that I could delegate this role to someone else.

“I’ve been accused of being racist. But just imagine if I’d sent a black person into situations that I wasn’t prepared to go into myself.”

Torture and prison

With a celebrated 40-year career of unearthing social injustice, it is impossible to doubt Gunter Wallraff’s motivations.

In one assignment he went undercover as an anti-government protestor in 1970s Greece and was tortured and imprisoned.

The film has won praise for starting a debate about racism in Germany. After a Q&A session with Mr Wallraff in a Berlin cinema, one young black woman said the film was “interesting, helpful and needed for Germany”.

She said: “I’ve lived here all my life, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen an audience like this discussing this issue.”

Racism is viewed as unacceptable by mainstream German society, and many urban areas pride themselves on a multi-cultural tolerant atmosphere.

But there do still exist so-called “no-go areas” – particularly in rural eastern Germany – which anti-racism activists advise non-white people to avoid.

Gunter Wallraff’s film has already done a lot to spark discussion about racism. With an ageing population, Germany is now having to come to terms with being a country of immigration.

Clearly the debate is just beginning.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – A U.S. soldier who deserted his unit to avoid returning to Iraq has applied for asylum in Germany, saying the Iraq war was illegal and that he could not support the “heinous acts” taking place.

Andre Shepherd, 31, who served in Iraq between September 2004 and February 2005 as an Apache helicopter mechanic in the 412th Aviation Support Battalion, has been living in Germany since deserting last year.

“When I read and heard about people being ripped to shreds from machine guns or being blown to bits by the Hellfire missiles I began to feel ashamed about what I was doing,” Shepherd told a Frankfurt news conference Thursday.

“I could not in good conscience continue to serve.”

Shepherd, originally from Cleveland, Ohio and ranked as an army specialist, applied for asylum in Germany Wednesday, said Tim Huber from the Military Counseling Network, a non-military group which is assisting him.

According to U.S. law, soldiers who desert during a time of war can face the death penalty.

The soldier said he was particularly hopeful he would be granted asylum in Germany, a staunch opponent of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, due to the legacy of the post-war trials of Nazi officials, notably in Nuremberg in 1945-1949.

“Here in Germany it was established that everyone, even a soldier, must take responsibility for his or her actions, no matter how many superiors are giving orders,” he said.

Shepherd, who enlisted in January 2004, is only the second U.S. soldier to have applied to Germany for asylum “in a similar situation,” said Claudia Moebus from the government’s department for migration. The earlier application was later withdrawn.

The specialist was posted to Germany in 2005 where he undertook desk jobs, but he gradually began questioning the justification for the Iraq war and began worrying he would be sent back to serve there, said Huber.

“That’s when he went AWOL,” he added.

Earlier this year, Jeremy Hinzman, an American who applied for refugee status in Canada after deserting the U.S. Army when he received orders to go to Iraq, said he would appeal a deportation order returning him to the United States.

Another U.S. deserter, Robin Long, was deported from Canada in July and sent to jail in Colorado.

PETA SEEKS MIJAC’S HELP WITH FORMER GIRAFFES:

Animal rights group says animals are being mistreated at their new home.

*TMZ.com is reporting that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is upset over the current treatment of giraffes that were once owned by Michael Jackson, and have sought the entertainer’s help in trying to make things right.

During the downward spiral of Neverland Ranch a year ago, a large portion of Jackson’s pets – including four giraffes – were sold to an Arizona couple that wanted to start an animal sanctuary.

PETA claims the giraffes are stuck in cages barely as wide as the animals are tall, reports TMZ. They wrote the King of Pop a letter asking him to help pressure the owners into doing something more humane.

The couple that owns the animals says the giraffes have been moved to their new 150 x 150 ft. digs — and the animals will have an even bigger space to roam when their 185 acre sanctuary is up and running.

News: Remy Ma Wants Out Of Jail, Lawyer Files Appeal

An attorney for incarcerated New York rapper Remy Ma has filed an appeal requesting to have her eight year prison sentence dropped.

(Ed Note – That is the most unbelievable line in this whole story, Dropped, and she point blank shot this woman who lived and testified. co’mon Remy)

According to TMZ, Remy’s lawyer pointed out various flaws in her recent summer trial when she was charged and placed behind bars for the shooting of acquaintance, Makeda Barnes-Joseph.

“THE TRIAL COURT’S ORDER FORBIDDING DEFENSE COUNSEL FROM ARGUING DURING SUMMATION THAT MAKEDA JOSEPH WAS SHOT DURING A STRUGGLE FOR THE GUN DENIED MS. SMITH A FAIR TRIAL,” a document reads. “MS. SMITH WAS UNFAIRLY PREJUDICED BY THE INCLUSION IN THE INDICTMENT OF THE COUNTS REGARDING THE VIOLENT GANG ASSAULT AT THE PLAYER’S CLUB, AS TO WHICH THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF HER COMPLICITY, BUT WHICH LIKELY COLORED THE JURY’S CONSIDERATION OF THE REMAINING COUNTS.”

In addition to claims of bias during the case, her attorney would like her possession of a weapon charge dropped.

“THE GUN POSSESSION CHARGE MUST BE DISMISSED BECAUSE PENAL LAW 265.03 UNQUALIFIEDLY BANS THE POSSESSION OF HANDGUNS OUTSIDE THE HOME,” it reads. “OR PLACE OF BUSINESS AND IS THEREFORE UNCONSTITUTIONAL.”

As previously reported by SOHH, the former Terror Squad member turned herself in to New York police in July 2007 for the shooting of Joseph outside a nightclub. Remy was later sentenced to an eight year bid last May and is currently beind held at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Bedford Hills.

Suge Knight Cries Foul, Blames Cops For Missing Bling

Just over a week after filing a lawsuit against rap star Kanye West over a missing diamond stud earring, Suge Knight is now blaming California authorities for another case of stolen jewelry.

According TMZ, the former record label mogul has pointed the finger at Barstow police in his U.S. Bankruptcy case. Suge claims – in a an incient that hapened three years ago – while being transferred from police headquarters to West Valley Detention Center to the California Institution for Men, his earring was stolen

As previously reported by SOHH, the former Death Row Records owner recently sued Kanye for over $135,00 stemming from a gun shot wound and robbery attained at the producer’s pre-MTV Video Music Awards party, also back in ‘05.

In related news, Suge also recently made headlines after being charged with three felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a physical confrontation with his girlfriend last summer.
