Rihanna’s lawyer has told Newsbeat the singer has been ordered to appear in court at her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown’s assault trial.
Donald Etra said the singer received the subpoena earlier this week: “She was served with the order, by prior arrangement, at my office on Tuesday.”
It means Rihanna is legally required to attend court as a witness.
Chris Brown denies attacking Rihanna in a parked car on the night before the Grammy Awards in LA in February.
The 20-year-old RnB star is charged with assault and making criminal threats.
Performance cancelled
He has pleaded not guilty, but if convicted faces up to four years in prison.
Although Rihanna has not spoken publicly about the alleged incident, her lawyer has said she would be prepared to testify.
The Umbrella singer was forced to cancel a scheduled performance at the Grammys after her ex-boyfriend was arrested.
The 21-year-old later issued a statement thanking fans for their support.
Chris Brown has since posted a video of himself online hitting back at his “haters” and denying being a “monster“.
“Everybody that’s haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love ya’ll. I ain’t a monster,” he said.
Rihanna is due to appear as a witness at Los Angeles Superior Court for a preliminary hearing in the case on 22 June.

Those nude photos said to be of Rihanna? Chris Brown didn’t have anything to do with them, his rep says.
Of course he was suspect. He was the first person many people thought of when nude photos, allegedly of Rihanna, showed up on the Internet on Friday.
But Chris Brown says he didn’t do it.
“This is both a false and defamatory statement,” his rep says in a statement to Essence.com. “Chris has not released or ‘leaked’ any photos of Rihanna (or anyone else for that matter).”
Rihanna’s record label, Island Def Jam Group, hasn’t said whether the photos are of their singer, but it has reportedly fired off a cease-and-desist letter to web sites that published the photos.
After celebrity blogger Perez Hilton suggested that Brown “must be responsible” for leaking the pics, Brown’s spokesperson issued the denial.
Brown, who dated Rihanna for a year, is charged with two felony counts in connection with an altercation between the two in February.

Late last week, self-taken nude photos of a woman alleged to be award-winning pop star Rihanna were posted on the internet, and while no one from RiRi’s camp has denied or confirmed it’s the “Umbrella” singer in the pics, a rep for her estranged boyfriend Chris Brown is lashing out against online reports that he had anything to do with these photos making their way to the world wide web.

THEY say revenge is a dish best served cold. After keeping a dignified silence, RIHANNA has finally hit back at ex-boyfriend CHRIS BROWN after he was accused of beating her up.
Her reply comes in a demo of a new track, Silly Boy, which has been posted on the net by her rapper pal KANYE WEST.
The song, with guest vocals by LADY GAGA, is about a girl who refuses to take back her ex-fella because he didn’t know how to treat her. Sound familiar?
It goes: “I said I’m not coming back. You fooled me once but you can’t have that ego turning.
“Just too bad for you, that when you had me. Didn’t know what to do, she’s over you.
“’Cause you had a good girl, good girl, girl. That’s a keeper. You had a good girl, good girl but didn’t know how to treat her.

Rihanna and fellow R&B singer Brown split earlier this year after he was arrested for allegedly laying into her after a Grammys party in LA. He is due in court later this month charged with assault.
A leaked photo later showed Rihanna with an horrifically bruised and bloodied face.
If Brown hopes Rihanna will take him back, her song will hammer home a very different message.

*E! Online is reporting that Rihanna met with an L.A. County domestic-abuse counselor within 24 hours of allegedly being beaten by her boyfriend, Chris Brown and stranded in a Beverly Hills neighborhood.
Brown was charged Thursday with two felony counts of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and making a criminal threat. His arraignment was postponed until April 6.
The Web site also learned that Rihanna used a police officer’s cell phone to call her manager, personal assistant and two other people within the first few minutes after an LAPD unit responded to her 911 call on Feb. 8. All the calls went to voicemail at the time.
“[Rihanna's friends and colleagues] didn’t pick up because no one recognized the numbers,” a source tells E!. Plus, because she was screaming hysterically, and that led her friends to think it was “some crazy person” calling when they first heard her voice.
As previously reported, the 21-year-old singer threw Brown’s keys out of the window at some point during the altercation, but she would not have been able to drive herself home because she has never learned how to drive, a source told E!
“Now see how you’ll get home,” Brown told her as he took off on foot, according to the source.
Although the court slapped Brown with among the least restrictive of protective orders, Rihanna does have the means to gather evidence against him if he causes trouble. She may tape record conversations with the R&B singer.
According to the protective order, which expires in March 2012, he may not “harass, strike, threaten, assault (sexually or otherwise), follow, stalk, molest, destroy or damage personal or real property” of Rihanna’s.
He also may not “disturb the peace, keep under surveillance or block movements” of her, and must get rid of any guns he may have by surrendering them to police or selling them to a licensed dealer within 24 hours. And he cannot “dissuade or prevent” anybody from attending a hearing or making a report to police.
Under the order, however, he is allowed to contact Rihanna in person or by telephone, and there are no limitations to how physically close he may be to her. The only restriction checked on the form is the box reading: “The protected persons may record any prohibited communications made by the restrained person.”
Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey has officially entered the national discourse sparked by the case, announcing Friday that her March 12 broadcast will focus on domestic violence among teens.
Winfrey, who has expressed concern about the incident on her talk show in recent weeks, was more forceful with her advice to the young couple on Friday.
She said, “You need somebody to tell you the truth in this moment. And the truth is guys, both Chris Brown and Rihanna, if I were your friend, I would call you up and I would say ‘Give it some time, get yourself some counseling, take care of yourself, heal yourself first.’
“And also, ‘Love doesn’t hurt. I’ve been saying this to women for years – love doesn’t hurt. And if a man hits you once, he will hit you again. He will hit you again. I don’t care what his plea is, he will hit you again.’”
While Winfrey certainly considers the situation serious, others have attempted to exploit it for laughs.
Recently, 50 Cent expressed regret over poking fun at the incident in a clip on his Web site. But, comedian Lisa Lampanelli appeared to be unapologetic about her Brown/Rihanna zinger during Comedy Central’s roast of Larry the Cable Guy.
Commenting on the comedian’s catch phrase “Git R Done,” Lampanelli said, “You’ve beaten that concept so hard it’s now dating Chris Brown.”
As the audience groaned, she said boldly: “Best joke ever.”
She also threw in a racist joke to boot, saying, “Git R Done is to rednecks what free fried chicken and white b*tches is to blacks.”
Of All People to say anything, Suge Knight. he should have kept his mouth closed.
“Chris Brown is a lil’ homie,” Knight said in an on-street interview. “I got more love for Chris Brown than anybody. One of the things Chris Brown did before at the time my daughter was turning 14 years old, it was her birthday, and they were having a concert. He put her on stage, sang happy birthday, he didn’t have to, showed a lot of respect and I respect him for that. So therefore, I’ma ride with him a thousand percent on whatever it is, period.” (TMZ)
Ironically, Suge pleaded guilty to misdemeantor battery against his girlfriend Melissa Isaac last month stemming from a domestic dispute the couple had summer 2008.
District Attorney David Roger said police had lost contact with Isaac and without her testimony on the witness stand, prosecutors would have had a hard time proving beyond a reasonable doubt not only the domestic battery charge, but the three felonies. “Domestic violence is a serious issue in our community, and anytime we can get a domestic violence conviction without a victim cooperating, we’re happy,” Roger said. “We’re hopeful the defendant will never batter a woman again, or he’ll face more serious charges and consequences.” (Las Vegas Sun)

Chris Brown Reunites With Rihanna in Miami
Los Angeles (E! Online) – UPDATE: Chris Brown was spotted early Saturday cruising on a jet ski in the waters around Miami’s Star Island, but Rihanna has not been seen outside the compound. But that hasn’t stopped paparazzi helicopters from buzzing overhead throughout the day.
E! News has learned that the R&B-star duo are spending one-on-one time at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Star Island mansion in Miami Beach.
“It’s very private; you can’t see onto the property,” a source said of Combs’ nearly 13,000-square-foot beachfront home.
Earlier this week, sources said that the pair had been in touch, with Brown contacting Rihanna on her 21st birthday on Feb. 20.
A rep for the “Disturbia” singer denied that she had talked to him on the phone, but…they apparently reconnected somehow.
“While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves,” a source told People, which first reported the apparent reconciliation.
This looks to be the pair’s first in-person reunion since Brown was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly assaulting Rihanna and leaving her with visible injuries. Except for flashes of them in transit (separately) from here to there, and some pics of Rihanna that just surfaced from her sojourn to Mexico last weekend, both have lain incredibly low since.
Brown, who was booked on Grammy night on suspicion of making criminal threats, is due to be arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court on March 5 but, according to the L.A. District Attorney’s Office, that might not happen.
“We don’t have the evidence yet. [LAPD detectives] are still investigating,” D.A. spokeswoman Jane Robison told E! News Wednesday.
“The D.A. is being even more thorough than usual with this case. They don’t want to mess it up,” said a source close to the investigation.
At this point, it’s unclear what Rihanna and Brown’s reported reunion could mean for the D.A.’s case.
“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired,” Brown said in a statement released Feb. 15. “I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person.“

Pop star Rihanna has issued a statement thanking fans for their support after an alleged assault by her R&B singer boyfriend Chris Brown.
However, she declined to comment on a leaked photograph which appears to show her with facial injuries.
“At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown,” the star said via her spokesperson.
“She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong.”
‘Saddened’
Brown was questioned by police on 8 February over a complaint of assault.
Police said the 19-year-old got into an argument with an unidentified woman in a parked car in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles, which escalated after they left the vehicle.
Both Brown and Rihanna pulled out of that night’s Grammy awards, where they had been due to perform.
He has since said he was “sorry and saddened” by the incident and was seeking counselling.
Prosecutors have asked police to provide more information before deciding what charges, if any, to pursue against him.

On Friday, Rihanna’s 21st birthday, a photograph was posted on a US gossip website which purported to show the Barbadian star in the hours after the incident with welts, scratches, bruises and swelling on her face.
After it appeared, the Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation and asked for the public’s help in finding the person who leaked it.
A police news release said the image “has the appearance” of one taken during a domestic violence investigation, and classified its release as a case of serious misconduct.
“The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence,” it added.
Digitally manipulated images of Rihanna with facial injuries have appeared on the internet several times over the last couple of weeks.
In her statement, the singer – whose hits include Pon De Replay and Umbrella – said she was “doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time”.
Chris Brown may have gotten lucky because the charge he was booked on is kinda weak, law enforcement sources tell TMZ. But he’s still in big trouble, and Rihanna says it’s not the first time he’s attacked her.
Sources say the Los Angeles County District Attorney kicked the case back to the police for further investigation because evidence that he made criminal threats against Rihanna is kind of thin. Our sources are quick to say he will, however, almost certainly be charged with felony domestic battery, a lesser offense but still serious.
Here’s how it went down, according to the police report. After Chris received a text message from a woman who wrote about getting together, an argument erupted. By the way, initially, Rihanna would not tell cops what started the argument.
She did, however, tell them that during the argument, he started hitting her. According to the police report, she ordered him to drive her home and “faked a call” to someone, saying things like, “He’s dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there.”
Rihanna told cops the fake call enraged Brown. He said something to the effect of “You are really fu**ed up now. I’m going to kill you.” This statement is the basis of the criminal threats charge.
At that point, according to the report, Brown allegedly began a violent attack with his fists. At some point, Rihanna took the keys out of the ignition and threw them outside.
And there’s this. According to the police report, she told cops this was not the first time Brown hit her. She referred to it as an ongoing and escalating abusive relationship.
We’re told the criminal threats charge is based on that one statement Brown allegedly made. As one law enforcement source told us, “It’s kinda weak, and the D.A. is not going to prosecute a high profile case like this unless it’s solid.” That’s why it was kicked back for further investigation.
Given the brutal nature of the attack, which the photos clearly show — contusions on the face, swollen eyes, cut lip, bloody nose, bite marks on fingers and arm — a felony domestic battery charge is virtually a done deal. That, however, is a less serious offense than making criminal threats.
