Early in August Wordpress put out back-to-back updates; strange. we read that it had to do with a security vunerability, and decided to comply. we upgraded within hours of the availability; using the on-blog tools.

it was fast, clean and easy. we suggest that if you are reading this and you host your own wordpress blog on your own domain;  you should make sure you are running wp 2.8.4.  you can verify by looking in the lower right hand corner of your dashboard and the version is clearly shown.

Word Press Blogs Falling Prey to Worm

A worm is circulating that can post malware and spam to some WordPress blogs using outdated versions of the blogging software, according to a post by Matt Mullenweg, founding developer of WordPress.

The worm can be tough to catch, as Mullenweg explains: “it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at users page, attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts.”

The vulnerability allowing the attack was discovered August 11, at which point WordPress encouraged users to upgrade to version 2.8.4. However, many people have yet to upgrade, and reports online indicate the worm is making dubious progress by the hour.

The worm does not affect the current version 2.8.4 and the one prior to it. And it only affects people who host their own WordPress blog. Blogs hosted on wordPress.com are unaffected.

Help I think I’ve been hacked

So you’ve carefully installed WordPress, you’ve made it look exactly how you like with a decent theme, you’ve maybe installed some fancy plugins and you’ve crafted some fine posts and Pages. In short, you’ve put a lot of time and effort into your site.

Then, one day, you load up your site in your browser, and find that it’s not there, or it redirects to a porn site, or your site is full of adverts for performance-enhancing drugs. What do you do?

Some steps to take

• Scan your local machine.
  • Sometimes the hacks have been introduced because a hacker has compromised a program on the computers being used to upload files. Give your local machine a full scan.

• Check with your hosting provider.
  • The hack may have affected more than just your site, especially if you are using shared hosting. It is worth checking with your hosting provider in case they are taking steps or need to. Your hosting provider might also be able to confirm if a hack is an actual hack or a loss of service, for example.

• Change your passwords.
  • Change passwords for the blog users, your FTP and MySQL users.

• Take a backup of what you have left.
  • If your files and database are still there, consider backing them up so that you can investigate them later at leisure, or restore to them if your cleaning attempt fails. Be sure to label them as the hacked site backup, though…

• Read Donncha O Caoimh’s guide on what to do.
  • Donncha wrote a good article on what to do if you suspect a hack, it is well worth reading through and acting on, as it goes into more depth than this page.

• Read How to clean your hacked install on Smackdown!
  • Again, this goes into detail on the steps you might need to take.

• Check your .htaccess file for hacks.
  • Hackers can use your .htaccess to redirect to malicious sites from your URL.

• Consider deleting everything.
  • A sure way to remove hacks that currently exist, is to delete all the files from your web space, and clear out your WordPress database. Of course, if you do this, you would need backups to restore to, so …

• Consider restoring a backup
  • If you restore known, clean, backup of your WordPress Database, and refresh your WordPress, plugin and theme fils through FTP, that will ensure all those bits are clean of malicious code. At the very least …

• Replace the core WordPress files with ones from a freshly downloaded zip.
  • Replacing all your core files will ensure nothing is left behind in them in a hacked state. Remember to replace plugins and theme files, too.

• Upgrade!
  • Once you are clean, you should upgrade your WordPress installation to the latest software. Older versions are more prone to hacks than newer versions.

• Change the passwords again!
  • Remember, you need to change the passwords for your site after making sure your site is clean. So if you only changed them when you discovered the hack, change them again now.

• Do a post-mortem.
  • Once your site is recovered, check your site logs to see if you can discover how the hack took place. Donncha’s article goes into detail on this.

Many Entrecard users have no idea about blogs being banned, especially over issues of free political speech. The other thing is that Entrecard users are mostly anonymous. Many never give their real names or locations and use only dynamic IP’s that are not logged at their ISP’s on a permanent basis. Suing them all just isn’t practicable. Many are scattered all over the planet too. In addition, before suing people, it’s expected by the courts that the plaintiff would have made some express demands. What has EuroYank asked Entrecard to do? What’s been the response? Entrecard’s stated policy is not to listen to other users defending a banned blog or blogger.

What are Entrecard users to do, quit using it on principle?

first off it came from a Well Known Republican blogger; not just any republican blogger, but a woman from the heartland of america – who was not afraid to show us what the heart of america wants. Porn, and Sex; oooh yeah a Republican President.

Secondly, This is a blog that literally makes us have to visit it everyday whether we feel like it or not, Stalking It.  we have to go see what they are doing on there. you know you gotta keep a keen eye on those republican types, they might pass a bill or do some secret lobbying while you’re out there protesting them. you know how they are..

and thirdly, this is a blogger who really reallllyyy reallllllyyyy fired us up on the politics tip. she just loves to tell it like it t.i.s.

Just Read This – from her piece on the aftermath of the election and getting service on her new computer :

“Chuck” kept asking me for my serial number. I had no idea where the hell the serial number was, and I told him I am not in the habit of writing shit down for future reference. I am a Republican, for God’s sake. I don’t write anything down. I just make it up as I go along. I told him just as much, but all he kept saying was “oh, gosh, my goodness, doncha know, I am looking fer the license, you betcha.” He obviously went to the same finishing school as that Wasilla Hillbilly, Caribou Barbie.

I had had enough. I slammed down the phone, unplugged the PC, and threw it in the back of my BMW, and started on a road trip. If the Muslim Terrorist can’t go to the Mountain, the Mountain can go to the guy palling around with unrepentent domestic terrorists. Luckily I have a full selection of road tunes, for just such rage-inspired transcontinental voyages. So for the next 1,500 miles I had plenty of music to keep me occupied. Next stop Redmond, Washington.

I pulled up to Microsoft Headquarters just as the final song in my iPod was concluding. I carted out the PC; carrying it under one arm I walked up to the main reception area and demanded to see Bill Gates.

“I need PC support. Tell Bill Blanca is here.”

They acted rather incredulous. I told the receptionist, a rather lithe twenty-something, that I was a very famous right wing pundit, and I demanded immediate action. She just stared at me like I had just informed her she was two pounds overweight.

I slammed my fist on the counter and demanded once again that Bill give me my PC support.

I guess that did it. I got immediate attention. A few minutes later, I found myself being hauled into the back of a black and white on my way to the Redmond Police Station.

What is it with Republicans being taken away in the back of police cars these days?

this is the blog told us that it was Barack Who Killed Natalie Hollowaypossibly gay, or and also that almost everybody we’ve seen or heard about in politics is either gay, or covering for someone who is gay; damn.. no wonder prop 8 failed so miserably, they didn’t have Blanca’s support. We wondered when he posted this story, how it would play out in china, as the national media stops these type of stories from being posted.  little did we realize that because of Blogs like His and Ours; our readers in China are allowed to read these stories as long as they aren’t screened as anti chinese.

Chinese Internet Giant vows Overhaul after Ad Listing Scandal

Baidu, China’s leading search engine, has vowed to overhaul its operations as it has been accused two weeks ago by state-owned China Central television that Baidu used fradulent high cost-per-click advertisements as its search results.
Robin Li, Baidu’s chief executive officer, told the state news agency Xinhua yesterday that the firm had sacked staff over the case and could fire more. “We have already fired people who helped fabricate documents for unlicensed suppliers,” he said.

“We have removed the keywords of all four clients mentioned in the report and have begun to double-check the licences of all other hospitals and pharmacies on our client list,” he added.

One citizen surnamed Li said that he had spent more than 10,000 yuan at a clinic he had found on Baidu search listing but his lower abdominal pain persisted. He headed to the People’s Hospital in Beijing and was cured at only 100 yuan. The unlicensed clinic paid Baidu 16.56 yuan per click to stay the top of the search listing.

The search engine giant has always received criticism over the years from the public.

Launched in 1999, Baidu is the first Chinese company to be listed in NASDAQ. It has a market cap of 4.66 billion and its stock prices fell over 65% as compared to the same period last year. Baidu employs 7,000 people and accounts for about 70 percent of China’s search engine market.
