VIVIAN BLAKE, reputed leader of the notorious Shower Posse gang, returned to Jamaica yesterday. The 53-year-old Blake arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport about 12:20 p.m. after being deported from the United States.

Blake was sentenced to 28 years in Federal prison in June 2000 in a Miami Federal Court. He had been indicted there 12 years earlier but American authorities said he fled to Jamaica, by boarding a cruise ship in Miami, where he remained free until his arrest in 1994.

Dressed in a black suit and a white shirt, Blake was transported from the airport to the CIB headquarters, downtown Kingston, where he was processed and released.

Blake told reporters that he felt “great” being back home.

“At least I come to see my family,” he told The Gleaner/Power 106 News.

He said the first thing that he will do is to go and visit his daughter.

“I am going to see my daughter Dominique, I waan kiss her,” he said.

Asked if he had any regrets, Blake replied, “about what?”.

Tinted vehicle

Blake was whisked away in a tinted vehicle, driven by his attorney George Soutar.

More than 30 persons who supported Blake converged outside the CIB headquarters and when the vehicle that was transporting him drove out, they shouted his name.

One woman who walked behind the vehicle as it drove along East Queen Street yelled “Vivian Mi fren”.

He and other members of the Shower Posse were given lengthy sentences based on 52 charges brought by Federal prosecutors. These included racketeering, smuggling and distributing marijuana and cocaine from the Bahamas through the United States.

The Shower Posse, which was strong supporter of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), was also implicated in over 1,000 murders in the US. The ‘Feds’ said the Posse members operated lucrative illegal drug rings in Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Virginia.

Football scholarship

Blake was raised in West Kingston, a constituency that has backed the JLP in general elections since the 1960s. He attended St George’s College where he passed three GCE subjects, but went to the US in 1972 on a football scholarship.

He was one of the Shower Posse’s founders, reportedly ruling it with an iron hand. They were regarded as one of America’s most dangerous gangs during the 1980s when the narcotics trade was booming in that country’s urban centres.

The Shower Posse’s rise and fall is chronicled in The Shower Posse: The Most Notorious Jamaican Crime Organisation, a 2003 book written by Blake’s son Duane.

The gang’s story was also told on Black Entertainment Television’s critically acclaimed documentary series, American Gangster, last year.

Nigeria police hold ‘robber’ goat

Many Nigerians believe that magicians can turn themselves into goats

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat handed to them by a vigilante group, which said it was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape.

A police spokesman in Kwara State has been quoted as saying that the “armed robbery suspect” would remain in custody until investigations were over.

But another police spokesman told the BBC the goat was being held in case its owner claimed it.

The belief in witchcraft and the power to change shapes is common in Nigeria.

Police reform activists have condemned the “arrest”, saying it highlights the low education levels of many Nigerian police officers.

Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper has a picture of the goat and reports that police paraded it in front of journalists in the Kwara state capital Ilorin on Thursday.

But this was denied by national police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu.

“The vigilante group arrested the goat and took it to the police, then they told the media.”

The next morning journalists turned up demanding to see the goat, he said.

“But of course goats can’t commit crime.”

Incompetent

The BBC’s Andrew Walker in Abuja says communities often rely on ill-educated and badly prepared vigilante squads to fill the gaps where the police will not patrol at night.

Innocent Chukwuma of the justice reform group the Cleen Foundation, told the BBC that many Nigerian police officers were poorly educated.

“There are officers who don’t even have a secondary school education, and the police have a big job to do in finding these people and getting rid of them.”

He said in the past political leaders had allowed the police to be filled with incompetent and in some cases criminal officers so they could be easily bought to protect their own criminal activities.

Police have also been unable to stop vigilante squads from lynching suspects before they could investigate, he said.

Popular graffiti personality and dancehall artiste/enigma L.A. Lewis has been arrested.

The JA Star has learnt that the artiste and head of L.A. Lewis Enterprise was arrested on Saturday and slapped with charges of housebreaking, larceny and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Female artiste

The Half-Way Tree police told THE STAR yesterday that Lewis was arrested in relation to a December 2008 incident involving a female artiste who he was promoting. The name of that artiste is currently being withheld.

The police said while they could not disclose detailed information relating to the incident, Lewis was informed that he needed to report to the Half-Way Tree police following the December episode, but failed to do so. As a result, he was picked up last Saturday. Lewis is now awaiting an attorney, after which he will be questioned.

Scamming her

Earlier this month, The Star published a story in which a female artiste, who was a former member of the L.A. Lewis Enterprise, accused him of scamming her of more than $600,000 in addition to possessing her motor car. The police source, however, would not say if Lewis’ arrest was linked to this. Attempts to contact that female artiste were unsuccessful.

Fingerprint in King’s bedroom identified

The fingerprint of the man accused of murdering 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King was found on a Guinness bottle in King’s bedroom.

Fingerprint expert detective sergeant Devon Harris made the disclosure Wednesday when he testified at the trial of 26-year-old Sheldon Pusey.

Pusey has been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since last week Monday.

Harris said the comparison was made from photographic enlargements of the finger impression on the Guinness bottle and Pusey’s inked rolled fingerprints. He said the fingerprints of no two persons were ever proven to be the same.”I fully accept your finding and I have no doubt in my mind it is correct,” defence lawyer Berrie Bryan told Harris before he began to cross-examine him. Questioned as to whether he was equipped to analyse the contents in the Guinness bottle assuming that there was contaminated Guinness in it, Harris replied, “I do not deal with toxicology, sir”. Harris said once a surface was smooth it could be processed for fingerprints.

Stabbed

Detective sergeant Halstead Harris testified that on May 13 last year he saw Pusey at the holding area of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court. He said he requested a set of Pusey’s fingerprints and Pusey consented. He said after the fingerprints were taken he handed over the form with the fingerprint impression to Detective sergeant Devon Harris.King was stabbed several times at his home at 11A Waterloo Road, New Kingston, between March 19 and 20, 2006.

Witness says Peter King video-taped him in the nude

A prosecution witness has disclosed that 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King video-taped him in the nude at his (King’s) home at 11A Waterloo Road, New Kingston.

The witness made the disclosure while being cross-examined by defence lawyer Berrie Bryan at the trial of 26-year-old labourer Sheldon Pusey.

Pusey has been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since last week Monday for King’s murder. King was fatally stabbed at his home between March 19 and 20, 2006.

King’s bedroom

Questioned as to whether he had ever been video-taped in King’s bedroom having sexual intercourse with a number of men, the witness, who is in his early 20s, replied, “I don’t remember that, Sir”. The witness said he went to King’s house on a regular basis.

In giving evidence in chief last week Thursday, the witness said that about 10 p.m. on March 19, 2006, he saw Pusey at King’s house. He said King introduced Pusey to him and Pusey said his name was “Douglas”.

He said Pusey was wearing only a pair of underpants and a pair of socks while King was wearing a pair of boxer shorts. The witness said he went to bed downstairs and did not wake up until the next morning when the police came to the premises and “hauled” him out of the room. He said it was at that time he discovered that King was dead.

A medical doctor testified yesterday that about 5 p.m. on March 19, 2006, he and a friend went to King’s house. He said he knew King for 25 years and while he was there, Pusey came to the house and King introduced Pusey to him as Sheldon. He said he spoke to Pusey briefly.

The doctor said Pusey was sitting by the computer. Pusey’s hands were on his (Pusey’s) thighs. “I remember his nails were glossy, it was something that jumped out at you. I remember asking him how his nails were so glossy, how he came to get them like that. I recall him saying it was banana stain he used on his nails to get them so shiny.” He said when he and his friend left King’s house at minutes to 8 p.m. on March 19, 2006, Pusey was still sitting by the computer.

Cross-examined by Bryan, the doctor said he was aware that King had homosexual leanings and he was also aware that King led a homosexual life style.

Bull under police probe

A bull in James Hill district, Clarendon, Jamaica is now under police investigation, following the killing of its owner last Friday afternoon.

Police say they are looking into the possibility of whether the animal attacked its owner, Ira Anderson, 89, of James Hill, causing injuries that killed him. Anderson was found bleeding in his field after he had gone to attend to the animal.

Police reports are that about 4:30 p.m. Anderson left home to attend to the bull in nearby bushes. After Anderson spent an extended period in the field, relatives went to investigate and found him lying on the ground bleeding from his groin. The animal was seen standing close to the injured man. Anderson was taken to the Chapelton Hospital where he died while being treated.

The Frankfield police, who are investigating, theorise that the farmer may have been attacked by the animal, as such they are to do further checks to determine this.

Police say following the investigations, a decision will be taken about whether the animal should be killed.
